Melissa Leyva, MD is a member of Summit Medical Group's Pediatric Gastroenterology team. Dr. Leyva treats a wide range of pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, including constipation, abdominal pain, reflux, celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, feeding issues, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). In addition to treating general GI conditions, she also provides care to patients with liver disorders, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), auto-immune hepatitis, biliary atresia, autosomal polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), Alagille syndrome, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and chronic hepatitis B and C. “As a caregiver, I enjoy educating my patients and their parents so that they feel empowered to work towards better health,” says Dr. Leyva. “I utilize a child-centered approach and believe in partnering with families to provide compassionate and up-to-date care.”
Dr. Leyva is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist and is an accomplished researcher and presenter in her field. During her fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, her research focused on biliary atresia, a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in infants. This research gained her the Fellow Research Award presented to her by the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN).
Prior to joining Summit Medical Group, Dr. Leyva served as attending Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Hackensack Meridian Health. She was active in the Healthy Futures Pediatric and Adolescent Weight Management Program, providing care for patients with fatty liver disease and other GI complications of obesity. She has been recognized by New Jersey Family Favorite Kid’s Docs and Bergen County’s Top Docs for pediatric gastroenterology.
When not seeing patients in the office, Dr. Leyva enjoys spending time outdoors biking and hiking with her two boys.
