Men's Health Month: Dads and Postpartum Depression

Friday, June 1st kicked-off Men’s Health Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness of preventable health problems in males and encouraging early detection and treatment of disease among them. We’d like to continue the conversation by shedding light on a lesser known but critically important male health issue—postpartum depression. Although mainly recognized in women, postpartum depression affects approximately 10% of new dads. Sadly, many dads suffer in silence, unwilling to talk about or display their feelings openly, making their depression hard to spot.

What to look for?

  • Behavioral changes ranging from aggression to withdrawal
  • Anxiety
  • Physical pain
  • Loss of energy
  • Thoughts of self-harm
  • New reliance on alcohol or drugs

 

Even though postpartum depression can be very serious and even life-threatening, it can be treated and support is available. SMG Pediatric/Adolescent Medicine physician and survivor of paternal postpartum depression, Dr. David Levine, works as the Dad Coordinator for Postpartum Support International to help fathers across the United States deal with postpartum depression.
