October 6th is Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day, a one day, state-wide initiative to increase awareness of potential addiction dangers of prescription drugs and their link to heroin abuse rates in New Jersey.
SMG is committed to patient safety and is actively engaged in reducing unnecessary opioid prescribing and identifying alternative therapies. On September 26th, State Attorney General, Christopher Porrino and a panel of experts visited our Berkeley Heights campus to educate our physicians on the current state of the crisis and to familiarize them with the new opioid prescription law.
On the national level, SMG is joining Turn the Tide Rx, a campaign by the U.S. Surgeon General that utilizes a multifaceted approach to reduce the use of opioids.
We encourage our patients to talk to their health care provider about other ways to manage pain, including pain relievers, physical therapy and exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy and interventional pain management. To educate patients about risks of opioid use and alternatives, SMG is offering a new patient pamphlet.
