Interventional Pain Management

What is pain management?

Pain management (also known as pain medicine or algiatry) is a medical specialty involving treatment for short-term pain, long-term pain, or ongoing (chronic) pain. The goal of pain management is to prevent and ease pain to improve quality of life during treatment and the healing process.

More than ever before, patient treatment today involves a comprehensive approach that includes physical therapy, injection treatments, alternative treatments such as acupuncture, and effective pain medications when necessary.

In addition, effective pain management often requires a team of health care professionals, including the expertise, skills, and coordinated care of primary care physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, cognitive behavioral therapists, physical therapists, physiatrists, and occupational therapists. In some cases, alternative medicine practitioners such as acupuncturists, massage therapists, and meditation experts also contribute to help manage or prevent pain.
